The Coast Waste Management Association invites you to join us for our annual conference, October 17-19, 2018 in Victoria, BC.

"Global Challenges - Local Solutions" will bring together over 300 waste and recycling professionals to network and explore leading edge topics that affect the waste management, recycling and organics sector today.

Joining us at our conference this year we are excited to be welcoming Dr. Judith Sayers and Dr. Lisa Skumatz.

  • Judith Sayers was the elected Chief of the Hupacasath First Nation (located in Port Alberni, BC) for 14 years and the Chief Negotiator for 15 years. In her role as Chief, she focused on capacity building, sustainable development and restoring and rehabilitating Hupacasath territory. Judith is an adjunct professor to the Environmental Studies Department at UVIC.

  • Lisa Skumatz is an economist with more than 30 years of experience in solid waste policy and program design, evaluation, and modeling. Lisa is widely known for her expertise in "best practices" and quantities policy, program, and funding work, designed to identify effective and cost-effective sustainability initiatives. Lisa has published more than 150 well-cited papers and articles in solid waste, and has won two national "Lifetime Achievement" awards for her innovative work in solid waste (from SWANA and NRC).

Building on our successes from past conferences, the planning committee is hard at work developing a full program with topics and presenters covering a broad range of subjects. Topics being discussed include;
• Organic waste diversion & food recovery
• The future management of MSW
• New materials from discards
• Ocean Plastics & Plastic recycling
• Mattress recycling & EPR
• Textiles management
• Employee retention & recruitment
• Communication strategies

...and much more. Stay tuned for updates as the program is developed.

Our popular roundtable sessions have become a mainstay of Day 1; we expect this year will be no different with Local Government, Stewardship agencies, First Nations and Educators planning to meet. Tours proposed include; the Emterra Groups' CNG fueling facility, Moon Brewery & Pub, Compassionate Resource Warehouse, Disaster Aid Canada and Lighthouse Brewing Company.

We are working with the Compost Council of Canada, SWANA & BC First Nations Solid Waste Working Group to provide onsite training opportunities in the days leading up to the conference.
