King County Sustainable Cities February Roundtable - Better Health through Better Buildings
Save the Date: Thursday, February 15th

We spend 90% of our time, on average, indoors, often in spaces where exposure to pollutants is higher than outside. "Sick building syndrome" is the term for an actual medical condition where building occupants experience health and comfort issues that appear to be related to their time spent in that building. While many advances in building science and design have focused on making buildings better for the world around us, building professionals are starting to focus on making buildings better for their occupants. Because we spend so much of our lives indoors, designing buildings to support and promote human health and wellness and choosing materials and products within them that do the same can improve the productivity and quality of life for those who spend their waking and sleeping hours in them.
Join us for a discussion of the nexus of human health and building design and learn more about performance-based certifications and standards that focus on the built environment's impacts on human health and wellbeing. Tom Knittel of HDR will talk about the WELL building standard and projects that are pursuing WELL certification. Dr. Amy Kim from UW will discuss her research on the impacts of changes in the built environment on employee wellbeing, as well as the City of Bellevue's Fitwel certification process for City Hall. Dr. Erika Blacksher, also of UW, will discuss her research on social determinants of health and how achieving indoor spaces that promote wellbeing are a critical piece of creating healthy spaces for all.
