Keynote Speakers

Grant Baldwin & Jen Rustemeyer | Peg Leg Films 

Back by popular demand after presenting at WSRA's 2013 Conference, Grant Baldwin and Jen Rustemeyer are the duo behind The Clean Bin Project, a multiple award-winning documentary film and blog about a year long competition to live zero waste. Grant is a film director, editor, composer, and photographer who started his career in audio engineering while Jen is a writer and film producer by night and an analyst for Light House (a green building non-profit) by day. Between them they have bicycled across the country, written songs for hit movies like Limitless, taught veggie education in schools, and made toothpaste from scratch. They are dedicated recyclers and zero wasters and recently spent 6 months living off discarded/rescued food as part of their forthcoming documentary on food waste called Just Eat It.


Plenary Speakers

Jerry Powell | Editor, Resource Recycling, Inc. 

Jerry Powell is the owner of Resource Recycling, Plastics Recycling Update and E-Scrap News magazines. He is nationally recognized as one of the most knowledgeable professionals in the recycling field. Previously, Jerry founded and managed a recycling consulting firm for a decade and founded and managed a recycling business in Portland, Oregon for more than eight years. He is a past three-time chair of the board of the National Recycling Coalition and the three-time chair of the board of a state recycling association. Jerry has spoken on waste management and recycling issues in 46 states and five Canadian provinces.



Bob Kovich | Broker, Jordan Trading

Bob Kovich Has been in the recycling industry for over 29 years, and has spent time working in operations, sourcing, marketing and more. He has been with Jordan Trading for the last 9+ years as a broker/buyer of paper primarily for export to Asia and Latin America. Jordan Trading is based in upstate New York with offices in the U.K., Chile, Los Angeles, and Lakewood, Wa. At the WSRA 2014 conference, Bob will share his perspective on the Plenary session panel "One Year After the Green Fence."




Patty Moore | President & CEO, Moore Recycling Associates

Patty Moore is CEO of Moore Recycling Associates, Inc. She has been involved in the field of recycling since 1983 when she became fascinated with the commonality, variety, and value of waste while working at the Wilton Recycling Center in Wilton, NH. She was the principal author of How to Implement a Plastics Recycling Program (also known as The Idiot Book of Plastic Recycling), published by the Council for Solid Waste Solutions in 1991. Since then, she has not once looked back in her efforts to advance the number and type of materials collected for recycling on both a local and global scale. Ms. Moore was a participant in a Department of Commerce, Plastics Trade and Investment Mission to China in 1996 and continues to have a strong interest and understanding of the critical role played by China and other developing nations in domestic recycling efforts. 



Susan Choi | Director of National Accounts, America Chung Nam

Susan Choi is the Director of National Accounts with America Chung Nam, LLC (ACN). She joined the company as a Marketing Representative in 1995 after earning a BS in Economics from UC Irvine. She was promoted to Marketing Manager, Senior Marketing Manager, and again to Director in 2009. During the last 2 decades, ACN has grown from a 4-person company to a global presence in the recovered paper industry with offices in North America, Europe, and Asia. It has been the largest containerized shipper in the U.S. for the last 10 years. Today, ACN exports close to 8 millions tons of recovered paper to its affiliated mill Nine Dragons Paper and other major paper mills in China.


Matthew Stern | Area Recycling Director, Waste Management

 Matt Stern has had an interesting and diverse 25 year career in the solid waste and recycling industry.  He is currently the Area Recycling Director for Waste Management in the Pacific Northwest and is primarily responsible for the recycling processing operations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Vancouver BC, and Alaska.  Included in his facility network are three large single stream MRFs and a large C&D processing facility.  In 2014, these facilities will receive, process, and ship to market over 500,000 tons of recyclable material. Prior to joining Waste Management, he held positions in both the public and private sectors including working for the City of Portland and Lane County as well as managing a mid-size garbage and recycling company in Oregon. 


Galen Emanuele | President,  Shift Yes 

Galen is the President of Shift Yes and has been performing and teaching all levels of applied and performance improv for 8 years, including performing and touring with improv legend Ryan Stiles. He has over 15 years of experience in sales and marketing, and has provided staff development workshops and keynote presentations for many local and multinational companies and organizations. Galen is also the founder and executive director of Pass the Hat, a local nonprofit organization that provides financial relief to families that are victim of tragic events.
