UW Gears Up For National Collegiate Recycling Tournament

SEATTLE, Washington (January 31, 2014)  -  Beginning February 2, The University of Washington will be competing for national recognition in RecycleMania—a friendly tournament in which college campuses compete during the course of eight weeks to see which can reduce, reuse and recycle the most on-campus waste. The UW will take on nationwide universities, including Pac-12 rivals Arizona State University, University of Oregon and Washington State University.

Leading the charge for the UW Recycling department is a student committee consisting of 7 students organized by Housing & Food Services and UW Recycling. Promotional activities scheduled to take place at the HUB include a weekly "Get Caught Green-Handed” event in the HUB, in which students that "get caught” recycling and composting correctly have a chance to win a prize. Additionally, a trash-sort will take place on the Husky Lawn to demonstrate what the UW community is sending to the landfill.

Schools compete in 11 categories to see which can recycle the most paper, cardboard, cans and bottles, and food waste on a per capita basis; which can produce the least amount of waste; and which recycles the largest percentage of their overall waste stream. Updated rankings published online each Friday allow schools to track their progress and rally to improve their standings against rival colleges. The competition runs through March 29, with final results to be announced on April 11.
