Park Recycling Grant Accepting Applications Until

February 11

The DPS / KAB Public Park Recycling Grant program is designed to build or expand recycling opportunities in different park settings from neighborhood parks with playgrounds or athletic fields to regional parks with trails and natural settings.

Why Bins?
Convenience is often cited as the main barrier preventing people from recycling. The goal of this program is to remove that barrier by increasing the number of locations that offer recycling opportunities to park visitors.   Lifestyles have changed, and much more is being consumed away from home.  The purpose of a public space recycling bin is to bring the convenience and value of recycling to an "on-the-go” society.  Providing recycling access in shared community spaces promotes and reinforces recycling behavior at the individual level.  Further, at the community level, the public space recycling bin is both an active and symbolic demonstration of a commitment to cleaner, environmentally friendly gathering places.

Who Can Apply?
The grant program is open to all government agencies that own or manage local, regional or state parks. Nonprofit organizations and KAB affiliates are also eligible to apply on behalf of government agencies. For-profit businesses are not eligible to receive grants.

How Does It Work?
The program offers recycling bins designed for use in local, regional and state park settings. Apply on-line and describe your program needs, request your preferred bin type, and tell us how many you would like to receive. After grant recipients are selected, KAB will contact grantees to confirm details and arrange to have suppliers deliver bins directly to the recipients. To help further expand park recycling programs, grantees will be eligible to purchase additional bins of the same style at a discounted price.

When To Apply?
Grant proposals are considered during defined application periods. The 2014 application period will extend from January 6 until February 11.

How Are Proposals Evaluated?
The intent of this grant program is to help local communities increase the number of beverage containers recovered for recycling. While not every request can be fulfilled, the program looks to award bins to those applicants who can demonstrate the greatest potential to impact beverage container recovery. Proposals will be specifically evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Strength of Plan (proposal is well thought out; high potential to capture beverage containers documented, etc.)
  • Planning and Organization (enough detail provided to evaluate plan; demonstrates recycling knowledge to successfully implement program)
  • Education and Communication Plan (presents well thought out plan to raise awareness about the grant and new recycling opportunity with park users and surrounding community)
  • Tracking Performance Metrics (presents detailed plan for how weights of recyclable materials will be tracked over time;  further consideration given to applicants willing to track and report additional performance metrics)
The grant specifically targets beverage container recycling and is not intended to provide bins for collecting paper or other materials. To see the grant application questions before submitting on-line, click here.
