Golden Dumpster Award Winners Announced

Best practices for waste reduction and recycling demonstrated by Seattle Properties

Seattle, WA – Last night at the annual BOMA Seattle/King County, the winners of the 2013 Golden Dumpster Award were announced.  In partnership with BOMA, CleanScapes and Seattle Public Utilities, the Golden Dumpster Award annually recognizes commercial properties in Seattle that have made significant achievements in the areas of waste reduction, recycling and tenant education.

Awards were given in three categories based on the size of the building.  Each winner of the Golden Dumpster Award has made significant progress in reducing their total solid waste, while increasing recycling and educating their tenants on the best practices for reducing waste management costs and conserving natural resources.

"BOMA is delighted to partner with Seattle Public Utilities and CleanScapes to promote resource conservation through the Golden Dumpster Awards,” said Rod Kauffman, President of BOMA Seattle King County.  "By shining a light on the best practices of these organizations we hope to encourage others to utilize these cost-effective and environmentally responsible approaches.”

"These properties are leading the way on environmental stewardship,” said CleanScapes’ President and founder, Chris Martin.   "The tenants and property managers at these sites set an excellent example for other commercial properties to follow.”

"This year’s Golden Dumpster winners exemplify this city’s commitment to recycling,” said Pat Kaufman with Seattle Public Utilities. "As part of their cost-effective business practices, Seattle’s business community has made recycling, composting and waste prevention a priority.”

The Golden Dumpster Award began as a way to encourage properties to limit the amount of waste generated by their buildings.  The award program encourages property managers to educate tenants on how best to limit their "waste footprint” while promoting composting and recycling as alternatives.  The results have been greater waste diversion and higher cost savings among participants.

Property managers used a variety of techniques to achieve their waste diversion goals including conducting waste audits, using smaller garbage containers, expanding recycling and providing face-to-face tenant training prior to the roll-out of new services.

The Golden Dumpster competition began in 2012 and is sponsored by BOMA Seattle/King County, CleanScapes and Seattle Public Utilities as a way to promote and reward best practices for reducing waste, reducing solid waste management costs and conserving natural resources.
