Plastics Recycling Opportunities for Oregon

AOR's winter forum will explore plastics recycling opportunities for Oregon. We'll kick off with a presentation of research sponsored by the American Chemistry Council analyzing the changing composition of the curbside recycling stream. Utilizing data from MRFs, plastic processors, brand owners, local governments, and other stakeholders, this presentation shows which plastics are showing up in roll carts and explains where they go, how they are processed, and ways the system could change in the future.

The Oregon DEQ will follow with a presentation on the recent findings from the Plastics Recovery Assessment Report. The report examines existing recycling markets, presents market options for mixed plastics and minor resins as well as recovery options for these materials, and discusses policies that have significant potential to increase plastics recycling in Oregon.

A panel of industry experts, including Kim Holmes, Director of Recycling & Diversion at SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association, will offer their thoughts on the implications of the changing waste stream and recovery options for Oregon collection and processing systems.

We’ll then break out into small groups to discuss findings from the presentations as well as various obstacles, barriers, and strategies for success to increase plastics recycling followed by a report out to the audience.

The day will conclude with a Happy Hour from 4-6PM hosted by Waste Connections for additional discussion and networking opportunities.
